Healthcare Professional "Call to Serve" Portal

The Volunteer Medical Professionals Intake Form was an online portal that collected information from health care workers from around the country who wanted to help New Jersey battle COVID-19.

Challenge

Amid the first surge of COVID-19 in April 2020, Governor Murphy issued a nationwide call for volunteers and healthcare workers with medical experience to help New Jersey care for its sick. Many hospitals had reached capacity, healthcare workers were stretched thin, and the State was building several field hospitals to handle the massive influx of patients with COVID-19.

Innovation In Action

OOI quickly set up a simple online form at covid19.nj.gov/vounteer to automatically collect information and process volunteers as they stepped forward. The system allowed applications to be reviewed by NJ Department of Health officials for consideration of temporary credentialing. By automating and centralizing the process, agencies saved valuable time and resources as they battled the pandemic.

Impact + Metrics

  • The portal attracted offers to assist from more than 27,000 medical professionals and volunteers

Status

  • This tool is no longer actively in use as the pandemic has reached a new phase with widespread vaccination and medical capacity has remained at manageable levels.
