Bilingual (Spanish/English) Content Design Lead
Office of Innovation – Design | Full-time
The New Jersey State Office of Innovation
The New Jersey State Office of Innovation is looking for diverse and experienced team members to deploy world-class innovative and digital services that solve pressing public interest challenges for the people of New Jersey. Our work spans numerous issue and policy areas, and is focused on making an impact in the lives of the New Jerseyans that we serve. Our work has decreased the amount of time it takes to apply for Unemployment Insurance, made it easier to start, operate, and grow a business in the Garden State, and connected millions of New Jerseyans to government programs, services, and benefits.
Our team members wear many hats, contributing to both the execution of core projects and the evolution of the Office of Innovation (OOI). We use data and modern research, design, and development methods to inform our decision making, and we collaborate with stakeholders within and outside of government to understand and solve challenges. To learn more about the New Jersey Office of Innovation, read our inaugural impact report here and visit our About Us page.
We are seeking a bilingual (Spanish/English) content design lead with at least 5 years of content design experience to support the Office of Innovation’s Resident Experience Initiative to improve how New Jerseyans access and obtain government services and benefits.
Approximately 1.4 million New Jerseyans speak Spanish at home. Connecting these residents to information, programs, and services is essential to the State’s ability to deliver services and resources more equitably. The bilingual content design lead will play a fundamental role in content strategy, creation, and research. Specifically, this role will drive the production and strategy of evolving plain-language content in both Spanish and English and collaborate with team members to enhance our ability to conduct Spanish-language user research and standardized user testing. Current products related to this initiative include informational websites, tools for checking application statuses, and other technical solutions that streamline access to information and services. As part of the team, your responsibilities may include:
Responsibilities:
- Deliver accessible, plain-language information about resident services to New Jerseyans.
- Guide product teams in creating high-quality content in both English and Spanish, setting the standard for developing multilingual user interfaces.
- Write and edit content in English and native Spanish about resident services, application processes, and requirements, ensuring accessibility and engagement across multiple channels and platforms.
- Develop and maintain plain-language guidelines and other content guides, in Spanish and English, for product teams to ensure a consistent product experience and intuitive informational text.
- Maintain and enhance processes, including large-scale content creation and strategy, while developing workflows that integrate technical tools, such as Translation Management Systems (TMS), to scale language access efforts.
- Leverage SEO, social, analytics, and user testing to inform the content development.
- Contribute to creating equitable experiences, where language and cultural considerations are vital factors in the product making process.
- Partner with designers and other product team members to advise them as they plan, recruit for, and execute user research in Spanish and English throughout a project, including translation during interviews or onsite shadowing.
- Support and collaborate with state agency partners to identify their ideal content/language access processes, including writing, teaching best practices, and developing workflow and strategy trainings.
Preferred Technical Experience, Skills, and Abilities:
- 5+ years of relevant experience, along with a commitment to public service and impact.
- Experience in translating and managing Spanish content with careful consideration of diverse cultures and dialects throughout the translation process.
- Demonstrated success in simplifying complex plain language in English and Spanish for user-friendly content and UX writing.
- Demonstrated familiarity with trauma-informed research practices and principles of accessibility and equity.
- Successful experience with leading and mentoring teams on content development and language access activities for multiple products or services.
- Familiarity with content and translation management systems for developing and sustaining content.
- Experience in using modern, iterative, user-centered, continuous delivery methodologies.
- Experience collaborating closely with stakeholders across government to gather input and ensure content accuracy, while also engaging with community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, and similar groups to test and optimize all generated content.
- Proven ability to conduct user interviews and surveys, as well as leverage data and analytics to inform content and cultural nuances in translations.
- Experience with optimizing content for search indexing for both public web search and internal site search.
- Interest in exploring generative AI.
We welcome applicants from a broad range of backgrounds. If you believe that you could excel in this role, we encourage you to apply. If you have any questions, please contact heather@innovation.nj.gov.
Compensation: Approximately $103,000 (depending on experience) + full benefits.
